A Kansas man was recently arrested in Faribault by members of the Owatonna Police Department after offering an Xbox for sex with what he thought was a teen online. The 31-year-old is still in the Steele County Jail and is facing a gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor charges.

According to the criminal complaint filed in Steele County court Tuesday, 31-year-old William James Kaufman Jr of Burns, Kansas was taken into custody on November 1st after law enforcement came to the GrandStay Hotel in Faribault.

The complaint alleges that Kaufman responded to 'global' message left by an undercover Owatonna detective on Whisper, an smart phone app, on October 31st, indicating that the detective, posing as a 15-year-old female, could " hook up with me while I'm in town". Converstaion between the two individuals continued which resulted in pictures of Kaufman's face and genetials being sent to the detective posing as the 15-year-old girl.

During the online conversation on 'Whisper' Kaufman "indicated that he was good at oral sex and wished to perform it" and also "offered to provide" the undercover detective "with his Xbox" if the teen "came to his hotel room and had sex with him."

On November 1st, law enforcement including the undercover detective posing as a 15-year-old online, arrived at the GrandStay Hotel in Faribault and began sendind Kaufman messages on Whisper saying that the 'teen' "had skipped school and had a ride to Faribault so they could meet in person."

As the online conversation continued Kaufman indicated he would leave work and come back to the hotel to meet the teen. Kaufman then, according to the criminal complaint, "confirmed that he would provide" the undercover detective with "an Xbox for having sex with him and would provide the 'teen' a ride back home."

During the converstaion on November 1, another member of law enforcement noticed a vehicle enter the hotel parking lot and linger in the vehicle while on their phone. It was noted that the individual was on their phone after messages were sent to and recieved by Kaufman via Whisper.

Law enforcement confirmed that the facial picture sent on October 31st matched that of Kaufman, and a cell phone found in teh vehicle after his arrest was opened to the Whisper home page.

Kaufman has been charged with Disseminating Harmful Materials to Minors/Visual Respresentation a gross misdemeanor that carries a punishment of  1 year in jail and or a $3,000 fine, Kaufman was also charged with Indecent Exposure-Public Place Willfully/Lewdly a misdemeanor that carries a punishment of 90 days in jail and or a $1,000 fine.
