If you ask most people, they'll tell you that these are indeed trying times for the United States of America. It seems like we're constantly bombarded with negatives. Inflation, gas prices, school shootings, hate crimes, and more. But even with those things and more hanging over our heads, we realize that we still live in one of the greatest countries in the world. As we approach the 4th of July, it's hard not to still feel proud and patriotic about this nation we live in.

But how do you measure patriotism? I'm certainly not going to sit here and question how much someone loves their country. Thankfully the folks at Wallethub came up with a formula they feel measures a state's patriotism. They compared all 50 states in 13 categories of patriotism. The fields range from military enlistment rates to the number of Americorp volunteers per state. After you add it all up, the state of Iowa should be proud! We rank in the top 10, at number 10, of the most patriotic states in the U.S.!

According to Wallethub, Iowa ranked highly in the following categories.

  • 13th in Peace Corp volunteers per capita
  • 12th in % of adults who voted in the 2020 presidential election
  • 24th in volunteer rate
  • 1st in U.S. History or Civics requirements
  • 6th in Americorp volunteers per capita

Overall Iowa's civic engagement numbers were great, ranking 4th in the U.S. Our military ranks slotted us at 41st. I can't sit here and definitively tell you that some states are more patriotic than others, but I do know this. Iowans are proud of our state and clearly proud of these United States!
