Huskies Power Their Way Past Winhawks

The Owatonna hockey teams swept Winona Thursday night. The boys won 5-2 at Bud King Ice Arena, converting three-of-four power play chances and adding a shorthanded goal. The girls overpowered the Winhawks with a five-goal first period on the their way to a 10-0 win, outshooting Winona 62-3.

The boys game was scoreless after the opening period. Winona struck first in the second period at the 4:18 mark. OHS responded about two minutes later as Tanner Stendel scored from in front of the net on a shot by Grant Achterkirch from the left point. Zach Kubicek also assisted.

Stendel took it upon himself during a penalty kill, carrying the puck through the left circle and slipping it past the net minder for a 2-1 Owatonna lead at 7:52 of the second. Aaron Bangs extended his goal-scoring streak to five games with a power play marker late in the period on a great pass delivery from Taylor Bogen behind the 'Hawks net. OHS led 3-1 after two.

In the third, Casey Johnson scored on the power play at 4:17 from Kubicek and Wyatt Oldefendt. Kubicek went top-shelf from Johnson and Casey Pederson on the man-advantage at 15:44. Winona scored in the closing minute for the 5-2 final. Owatonna had a 43-23 shot advantage. Preston Meier earned the win in goal. See the score sheet from Hockey Hub.

Owatonna hosts highly-ranked Gentry Academy Thursday, February 18 at Four Seasons Centre on Dudley Otto Rink.

The Owatonna girls eliminated any drama on their Teacher Appreciation Night with a five-goal opening-period outburst. The Huskies had eight different goal scorers as they built an 8-0 lead after two periods.

In the third, Sydney Hunst added her second goal to go along with four assists. Olivia Herzog netted her second of the night to close the scoring. Sam Bogen had a goal and three assists. Grace Wolfe contributed four assists. Ava Wolfe got the win in goal on three saves. See the score sheet from Hockey Hub.
