Historic Appointment of Tribal Legal Counsel to MN Appeals Court
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Governor Tim Walz has appointed the first Native American in Minnesota to serve on the State Court of Appeals.
Walz on Friday announced the appointment of Sarah Wheelock to fill a position now held by retiring Appellate Court Judge Carol A. Hooten. A news release says the seat is designated for a resident of Minnesota’s Second Congressional District.
“It is my honor to appoint Sarah Wheelock to the Minnesota Court of Appeals,” said Governor Walz. “In her time serving as legal counsel for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community and tribes across the nation, Ms. Wheelock has repeatedly shown that she is a dedicated public servant committed to advancing the common good. She is well prepared to join the Court of Appeals.”
Prior to taking the job representing the Shakopee Mdewakanton Community, Wheelock was employed as an Adjunct Professor at the Mitchell Hamline College of Law. She also served on the White Earth Band of Chippewa Court of Appeals.
