Paul Bunyan's Axe. Goldy Gopher. Several high-profile coaches. Whatever might be your top reason, the Golden Gophers Coaches Caravan will make a prime-time stop in Owatonna on Tuesday, May 21 at 5:30 pm at Torey's Restaurant downtown. The event is free thanks to sponsor Federated Insurance, but registration is required.

Director of Athletics Mark Coyle is scheduled to appear along with men's basketball coach Richard Pitino, women's hoops' coach Lindsay Whalen, men's hockey coach Bob Motzko, volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon and football coach P.J. Fleck. Many of those same coaches attended an event last year in town.

The caravan is only making four stops. In addition to Owatonna, the coaches will visit Dellwood (May 22), Chaska (May 28) and Alexandria (June 12). Deputy Athletics Director John Cunningham spoke to the Owatonna Rotary Club March 26 and assured the crowd that the caravan would be coming to town.

While the event is free to attend, a ticket is required. Click here for full details on the event and how to reserve tickets.

Torey's Restaurant is at 208 North Cedar and will feature an appetizer buffet and cash bar. There will be photo opportunities with Paul Bunyan's Axe which the Gopher football team won back from Wisconsin this past season. Coaches will sign autographs and pose for pictures as well. Goldy Gopher is likely to perform a stunt or two.

There will be a silent auction as well. Play-by-play announcer Mike Grimm will emcee.

The Gophers also announced that the Axe will be taken on a tour that will include Red Wing June 3 and Rochester June 4.
