The Faribault Lakers and Veseli Warriors engaged in a entertaining Mother's Day game in Veseli today.  The pitching was very good and hits consequently were hard to come by in the 2-1 Veseli victory.  The Warriors scored in the bottom of the first, Faribault tied the game in the top of the fourth and Veseli pulled ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Jack Helgeson went the distance on the hill for Faribault allowing 5 hits in 8 innings, striking out 8 and walking 2 batters while throwing 102 pitches, 70 strikes.

Veseli pitcher Ben Doerr allowed 3 hits while going the distance for the Warriors, striking out 9, walking 3 batters and hitting 2 batsmen.  Doerr threw 128 pitches, 78 strikes.

Joe Grote led the Lakers with two hits including an RBI double in the fourth inning and Dylan Valentine had Faribault's only other hit in the game.

The Lakers opened their season last Sunday in Elko and were defeated 7-1, so the defending DRS League champions are 0-2 to start 2018.

The first Warrior to bat in the game Cody Shimota walked and Nate Novak smacked a single advancing Shimota to third base.  Novak was thrown out trying to steal second base and Shimota scored on the play to give Veseli the lead.

Their go-ahead run in the sixth came when Shimota opened the inning with a single, Novak singled.  On a fielder's choice Shimota went to third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Doerr.

The Lakers travel to Shakopee Sunday at 2:00 p.m.  Their first home game will be Friday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. when the Owatonna Aces come to newly handicapped accessible Bell Field.
