Owatonna eighth-grader Abby Vetsch found a great way to celebrate her birthday. She scored her first two career varsity goals while leading the Huskies to a 4-2 win at Austin Thursday night. Freshman Ava Wolfe earned her first varsity victory in goal.

Vetsch scored her first goal early in the second period after a neutral zone face off sent the puck back into the Owatonna zone. She took the puck around the back of the OHS net and started a drive up the left wing that eventually led to a breakaway to tie the game at 1-1. The Packers Jaiden Schuster had scored late in the first period.

Vetsch's second goal midway through the second put the Huskies up for good. She grabbed a loose puck high in the Packers' zone, moved up the slot and fired into the net. The 2-1 lead stayed there for quite awhile despite several Owatonna power play chances, including a five-minute major on a checking from behind penalty. Chloe Schmidt got hit into the boards, but quickly got up and continued playing.

OHS extended their lead to 3-1 on Anna Herzog's breakaway goal at 7:05 of the third period with an assist from Gabi Lamont. Austin's Lily Holtz scored about 90 seconds later to pull the Packers within 3-2. Ezra Oien put OHS back up by two goals less than 30 seconds later with Schmidt on the assist.

Owatonna (6-7-2, 5-3-1 Big Nine) plays at No. 4-A Proctor/Hermantown Friday night at 7 pm. The Huskies will face St. Francis in East Bethel Saturday afternoon at 2 pm on their way back home.

Austin (3-12-1, 1-8) hosts Faribault Saturday afternoon for their next action.

In Owatonna's other Thursday events, the boys' hockey team topped Austin 6-1, boys basketball lost at No. 4 AAA Austin 80-59, girls basketball dropped a 70-49 decision to the Packers, the gymnasts scored 145.625 in their home opener over Red Wing and the boys swimmers lost a close meet at Faribault.
