The Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals and Goodhue Wildcats had their softball seasons end in the final four of the Section 1A Tournament in Austin Tuesday.  The Cardinals lost 9-3 to the Wabasha-Kellogg Falcons and Goodhue lost to Wabasha-Kellogg 6-0.  The Falcons flashed some leather in the Bethlehem Academy game with their senior center fielder Katie Malowsky making two nice running catches in the top of the first inning.

Wabasha-Kellogg scored two runs in the bottom of the first on 3 hits and an error.  A lead-off single by sophomore shortstop Savannah Larocque advanced to second when there was a error on the play.  The next batter was hit by a pitch.  Number three hitter, senior third baseman Adrianna Baab hit a RBI single scoring Larocque and the young lady hit by the pitch, junior second baseman Olivia Passe was thrown out trying to go to third.  Falcon senior catcher Maggie Klees smacked an RBI single to right and her courtesy runner freshman Morgan Baker was thrown out trying to steal second by Cardinal senior catcher Grace Viland.

Bethlehem Academy had their chances in the second and third innings but came up empty.  In the second Grace Viland was issued a four pitch walk and following a pop out seventh grader, shortstop Kate Trump clubbed a single and runners were on first and second with one out.  A strike out looking and infield pop out ended that threat.

In the third inning number 9 hitter in the Cardinal order, junior Jacie Jasinski had a solid single on a 2-2 count to start the inning.  After a fly out freshman Malia Hunt hit a ground ball to second and Jasinski was eliminated from the bases for the second out.  Senior third baseman Jess Oathoudt hit a single to right and Grace Viland was walked again to load the bases.  Sophomore first baseman Grace Ashley hit a hard grounder to third and the third baseman for the Falcons simply stepped on the third base bag for the force out to end the inning.

Wabasha-Kellogg sent 8 batters to the plate and scored three more runs on 2 hits in the third inning.  Two Cardinal errors in my scorebook didn't help matters either for senior pitcher Tess Glenzinski.  The big blow of the inning was a two run homer by Baab.

Bethlehem Academy answered with two runs in the top of the fourth.  The first batter was Kate Trump and she hammered a homer to straight center field.  Sophomore Maggie Viland was walked, designated player Katie Jasinski hit a single scoring Viland who had gained second base on a wild pitch.

The Falcons added two more runs in the fourth inning.  With two outs following a lead single by the number nine hitter.  Glenzinski got tough hitter Baab who had a single, home run and three RBI going into the 4th inning to hit a high pop up and Cardinal shortstop Trump looked like she was going to make the catch when she collided with the second baseman.  A run scored and Baab alertly ended up at second base and the next batter Klees clubbed an RBI double for her second RBI of the game.

In the top of the fifth inning Oathoudt started with a single on an 0-2 count.  Grace Viland had a single and Oathoudt was at third when Trump hit a grounder scoring Oathoudt but Viland was out at second.

Wabasha-Kellogg added two runs in the 5th inning when 8 batters went to the plate again.  There were two hit batters in the inning and they scored.  After the number 8 batter sacrificed the first hit batter to second base for the second out the ninth batter in the order was hit by a pitch, Larocque singled, Passe hit a 2 RBI single and Baab was walked to load the bases before the final out was recorded.

Our Faribault State Farm Insurance agents Faribault players of the game were Trump with 3 hits and 2RBI and the three seniors Tess Glenzinski, Jessica Oathoudt and Grace Viland.

Line score for the game was Wabasha-Kellogg 9 runs, 10 hits, 0 errors and 8 runners left, 7 in scoring position and Bethlehem Academy 3 runs, 8 hits, 5 errors, 10 runners left, 4 in scoring position.

Glenzinski finished with 1 strikeout, 2 walks, 4 hit batters and 10 hits allowed.

Falcon winning pitcher Anna Schneider went the first six inning with 7 hits allowed, 3 strikeouts, 4 walks and a hit batter.

Wabasha-Kellogg immediately went over to the field where Goodhue lost to Hayfield 16-1 and the Wildcats appeared be be in a bit of a funk losing 6-0 to the Falcons.

That means Wabasha-Kellogg goes back Thursday to play Hayfield for the Section 1A title and has to beat the Vikings twice.  Hayfield is trying to win their 4th straight Section crown.

A bit of feast or famine for the Goodhue Wildcats winning the East Subsection title after wins over Rushford-Peterson 15-0, 7-2 against Mabel-Canton and 10-0 to Wabasha-Kellogg.

Tuesday a different team appeared to be in Austin with the Wildcats being outscored 22-1 by Hayfield and Wabasha-Kellogg to end their season with a 11-11 record.

The Falcons have the luxury of being able to throw two pitchers and junior Anna Schneider got the win against Bethlehem Academy while freshman Julia Schmoker defeated Goodhue.

Schmoker appeared to me to be the harder thrower.

I was told by some Goodhue fans the Wildcats faced Schneider when they beat Wabasha-Kellogg 10-0 last week.
