It's less than three months until high school football begins in Minnesota. That leaves plenty of time to enjoy summer, go to the lake, and grab a malt at Dairy Days and again at the Steele County Fair. The high school spring sports season is yet to wrap up with state tournament time upon us. But looking forward to a full fall sports season can't be overlooked.

Prep football teams will play a full regular season in 2021 after holding a late-starting, abbreviated six-game schedule in 2020. The playoffs last year consisted of one game for most teams. The season was initially delayed to spring, then the high school league changed course and reinstated football and volleyball for last fall.

Owatonna won the 2020 section title in a one-game playoff by beating Rochester Mayo.

Owatonna's schedule (games are at 7 pm unless noted otherwise)

  • Friday, September 3 at Rochester Mayo
  • Friday, September 10 vs Rochester Century
  • Friday, September 17 at Mankato West
  • Saturday, September 25 vs Austin, 1 pm
  • Friday, October 1 at Northfield
  • Friday, October 8 vs Rochester John Marshall
  • Friday, October 15 at New Prague
  • Wednesday, October 20 vs Kasson-Mantorville

The September 10 home opener will also serve as the Hall of Fame game as Owatonna honors their first group of 'Teams of Distinction.' The ceremony was canceled in 2020.

Offseason weight-training and seven-on-seven leagues are underway. The Huskies just finished fourth at an event at Nebraska with some dramatic last-minute and overtime wins.

Minnesota has 66 beautiful state parks. The parks have an average of 9,700,000 visitors each year. Interestingly enough, nearly 19% of park visitors come from other states and countries, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Now, my favorite State Park is Jay Cooke in Carlton, MN, but it did not break into the top 5.
