Halloween is upon us and for many, it'll be a laid back experience this year while sticking close to home.  If you're doing a movie night, these 80's movies will do the trick.

When it comes to scary movies, I tend to stay away from the slasher movies and lean more towards mystery, horror, ghost stories and the supernatural.  With all due respect to Michael Myers, it just seems to me as though that genre is played out.

Give these classic 80's titles a try this weekend and I doubt you'll be disappointed, or sleep very well.

The Shining

The Shining never disappoints!  This movie has scared me since my dad took me to see it when I was just 11 years old.  It's a slow burn filled with creepy images, creepy music and Jack Nicholson at his finest

The Thing

This really is my favorite horror movie of all time.  Forget the remake, stick to the Kurt Russell version filled with special effects that weren't created on a computer.  Isolation and horror dominate this movie and the cast is terrific.

An American Werewolf In London

Who would've thought that John Landis, the director of 'Animal House' was capable of a classic horror movie that features one of the best werewolf transformation scenes ever put on film?  Sure, the effects may look slightly dated, but it's full of scares and humor and is worthy of your time.  Heck, Michael Jackson liked it so much that he asked John Landis to direct his "Thriller" video.

The Changeling

'The Changeling', starring George C. Scott, is part ghost story and part mystery and the two genres blend together nicely.  After suffering a family tragedy, Scott moves into an old mansion and things get creepy very quickly.  I love the slower pacing in this movie and you won't want to miss the seance scene!

Evil Dead II

You're either all in on the campy, gore-filled 'Evil Dead' movies or your not.  I'm all in and the best of the bunch is 1987's 'Evil Dead II'.  Director Sam Raimi and lead actor Bruce Campbell work perfectly together to create moments so off-the-wall gross that you can't help but laugh.  Don't worry if you've never seen the first 'Evil Dead', which is also very good, you'll still fully enjoy this bonkers sequel.
