The final numbers are in for Owatonna's Polar Plunge to benefit Special Olympics Minnesota held last weekend at Lake Kohlmier.

Special Olympics Minnesota reports that 175 plungers raised $36,000 to benefit athletes statewide. About 150 had signed up online in advance. Organizers were impressed that more than 20 registered to plunge on the day of the event. With temperatures in the 20s and just a light wind, the weather was favorable for a quick January dip in Lake Kohlmier.

This was the first time a plunge was held in Owatonna. Twenty plunges are taking place around the state this year. There is still time to sign up for a Polar Plunge. The plunge in Rochester is coming up Saturday, Feb. 14. Nearly 700 people are already signed up for that event.

Money raised by the plunges benefits more than 8,000 Special Olympics athletes across Minnesota. Owatonna has about 100 athletes that participate in basketball, swimming (usually in warmer water than Lake Kohlmier), poly hockey, softball, track and field, flag football and bowling.
