You Can Do This Get-Away in a Day
It is entirely possible, you can do this MN get-away in just one day. How do I know this? I have done it, not once, but twice. What get-away am I talking about? How about visiting the harbor city on Lake Superior? Home of Grandma's Marathon and some of the best scenic vistas in the State, yep, I'm talking about Duluth.
Ok, so it is a trek to get up there, at least 3 hours if you are dealing with rush hour traffic through the Cities, which we did. We did have to leave early, about 6:45 in the am. It is a full-day event, leaving early is the only way to get to see the sights and still have time for the drive back, which isn't too bad (read: no rush hour traffic at night).
I went as a leader for the youth group at my church, the youth pastor plans this every year; calls it Duluth in a Day. He describes it as both a marathon and a sprint, and he isn't kidding. 26 youth and 4 leaders took on the day as a challenge, and we won.
From a stop at Gooseberry Falls State Park, which I didn't realize was another whole HOUR north of Duluth, to Brighton Beach, to Park Point Beach, to the Canal District, and a stop at Enger Tower, it does make up a full day, and then some. We can't forget about the stop for dinner at Grandma's Saloon & Grill, they are great there. In fact, our waiter is from Faribault, so he knew just how far we had to drive to get there.
It was very warm, for Duluth, and I came out of it with a little more sun, and some great pictures of our wonderful State. So, if anyone tells you that you can't plan a day trip to Duluth, tell them it can be done. With caffeine for adults, lots of caffeine.
