Wanamingo Jacks Their Way to Victory
The Wanamingo Jacks had two multiple run homers in a 13-1 eight inning win over the Waseca Braves Friday night at John Burch Park in Cannon Falls. Sean Wingfield hit a grand slam in the 4th inning and Alex Roosen clubbed a three run homer to end the game in the bottom of the 8th inning.
Sam Roosen had a no hitter going until the 7th inning when Waseca collected two hits to score their only run. Roosen faced just two guys over the minimum and threw 79 pitches, 62 strikes with 7 strikeouts, no walks and a hit batter.
Wanamingo scored 4 runs in the second inning when 9 batters went to the plate. Peder Sviggum scored the first run when Brady Anfinson laid down a bunt following a walk of Sviggum. Sviggum never stopped running while Anfinson was being retired on a throw to first base. The throw from first to third went down the left field line and Sviggum scored. The Jacks collected five successive singles by Andrew Anfinson, Max Bowen, Gavin Roosen, Sam Roosen and Eric Swiggum with two outs to put the crooked number on the board.
Wanamingo had 9 men go to the plate in a 6 run 4th inning. Bowen led the inning off with a single. Gavin Roosen executed a beautiful bunt single. Sam Roosen was hit by a pitch. Eric Swiggum clubbed a two run single and during the Alex Roosen at bat stole second base. Ssam Roosen was at third base so following a Alex Roosen walk the bases were loaded.
Sean Wingfield hammered a 1-0 count elevated pitch over the left field fence which is extended upward for a grand slam putting the Jacks up 10-0.
It looked like the game was going to be over by the ten run rule in the 7th inning.
Sam Roosen was nearly perfect going to the 7th. His only blemish was a hit batter but he still faced the minimum number of batters thanks to a nifty double play turned by Alex Roosen and Bowen. Braves outfielder Jack PaczKowski hit a line drive that looked like it was going to go over Alex's head but he timed his jump perfectly, snared it and doubled off the runner at first base who had been hit by a pitch to spoil Sam Roosen's perfect game bid.
Roosen struck out the first batter he faced in the 7th inning. Kelvin Nelson then broke up the no-hit bid with a single to center. Following a ground out Nelson scored on an RBI single by Kyle Waugh extending the game.
Following an up and down top of the 8th for the Braves San Roosen was walked on four pitches to open the bottom of the 8th inning. Eric Swiggum stroked a single and Alex Roosen took a 1-0 pitch over the fence to end the game.
My line totals were:
Wanamingo 13 runs 13 hits 0 errors 6 runners left, 2 in scoring position
Waseca 1 run 2 hits 3 errors 1 runner left
This is a best of three games series for a berth into the Region 5C Minnesota Amateur Baseball Tournament. The two teams play again tonight at Tink Larson Field in Waseca at 7:00 p.m. If Wanamingo wins they advance to the Region. If Waseca wins they play tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in Wanamingo.
