Vegas’ Nose Leads to Owatonna Drug Bust
Owatonna police got an assist from their canine Vegas in making a drug bust last week. According to the department's Just the Facts newsletter, an officer made a traffic stop "for a driver the officer knew to have a suspended driver's license." Vehicle occupants made suspicious movements into the center console as the officer approached. "The male driver and female passenger gave conflicting accounts of how long they had been together and were both on probation for drug offenses."
Vegas, the Owatonna Police Department's narcotic detecting canine was called to the scene. "Vegas performed his duties and gave an alert of narcotics in the vehicle." A search found 3.7 grams of presumptive methamphetamine/packaging, in addition to 2.2 grams of marijuana/packaging.
Twenty-one year old Sam Bolton of Owatonna was arrested "and charged with 5th Degree Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Marijuana in a Motor Vehicle and Driving After Suspension."
Just the Facts indicates the officer knew Bolton had a suspended license, as he had stopped him the night before for suspicion of driving under the influence.
EXTRA ENFORCEMENT PERIOD UNDERWAY
Owatonna police, along with law enforcement agencies across the state "will focus on extra DWI patrol and awareness campaigns starting November 24 and going through New Year's Eve. Law enforcement will be looking for drivers who appear impaired...so plan for a safe ride - designate a sober driver, use a safe, alternate transportation option or stay at the location of your celebration," states Just the Facts.
