Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The National Weather Service says a survey team has determined the damage that occurred in part of southwest Rochester during Tuesday’s night's storm was due to a tornado.

The twister, rated as an EF1 tornado with winds up to 110 miles per hour, was blamed for ripping the roof off a home and knocking down a number of trees in the same neighborhood southwest of Apache Mall. The tornado was on the ground for about a mile and a half and was about 75 yards wide after it touched down in the Institute Hills area and then traveled southeast to the rural subdivision on the hill just east of the Pepsi distribution center along South Broadway.

The survey team also determined straight-line winds of about 70 miles per hour tore up a construction site at Bamber Valley Elementary School.

The video was recorded about a mile east of the area where the tornado lifted. It's possible the rotation in the video is the remnants of the twister.

It was the first tornado to touch down in the city since 2010.
