Today is National Pig Day! It began with two sisters in 1972, Ellen Sranley and Mary Lynne Rave. Ellen was a teacher in Lubbock Texas and Mary lived in North Carolina. The objective was "to accord the pig it's rightful, though generally unrecognized place as one of man's most intellectual and domesticated animals." Pigs are actually very intelligent animals and as pets they can be trained to perform tricks.

There are hundreds of different breeds with almost all of them that descended from the Eurasian Wild Boar. I do not want to imagine what it would be like without bacon, spare ribs, ham, and baby back ribs? That is not to mention sausage and pepperoni pizza! While I like to eat pork, because I raise corn and soybeans I tend to look at the other side of what pigs eat and how I would survive as a farmer without my pork producing neighbors?

Pigs raised in Minnesota eat a lot of corn and soybeans produced in Minnesota. Plus, when you consider all the jobs in Minnesota related to pigs it is a huge part of our economy in Minnesota! So, have a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch or at least a bacon cheeseburger!
