Downtown Northfield will soon look drastically different. The City of Northfield sent out a release stating that the Archer House would start to be demolished this week.

The news release from the City of Northfield states that:

Demolition crews will be on-site of the Archer House, 212 Division Street this week to begin demolition of the existing structure that was severely damaged by fire in November of 2020. After thorough consideration of facts, the Heritage Preservation Commission approved a certificate of appropriateness for the demolition. A demolition permit has been issued by the City of Northfield.

The City of Northfield urges motorists to always drive with caution, slow down in work zones, and never enter a road blocked with barriers or cones.

The November fire at the Archer House was believed to have begun inside a restaurant located in the building, and by the time firefighters arrived on the scene, it was too late. Holes were cut into the back of the building in order to fight the fire, which after the fire was put out, made portions of it unfit for people to be inside.

The building had undergone a $1.1 million dollar renovation in 2011, after standing pretty much unchanged, there were some additions to the property that occurred in the 1980s, for the most part since being built in 1877.
