Still a Sports-Filled Weekend
This past weekend was supposed to be the Minnesota State High School boys basketball tournament. I would have sat side-by-side with broadcasting great Gordy Kosfeld for KDHL radio's 72nd year of baseline-to-baseline coverage of the event. Instead we were all stuck at home.
But that doesn't mean we were without sports. Between watching and listening to classic game rebroadcasts, seeing multiple March Madness highlights and virtual brackets on social media, and watching "Remember the Titans," I had one of my busier sports weekends. I also spent time sorting through my accumulation of high school sports score sheets and stats to be ready for prep sports to resume.
I listened to a bit of the radio broadcast of the 1965 World Series between the Twins and Dodgers while out on my run. I liked to old-school sound and didn't miss the new-age stats that are a part of the current baseball vocabulary. I had still started the morning by preparing the high school coaches show for the regular Saturday morning 9 am time slot on AM 1390 KRFO.
Later in the day I watched "Remember the Titans." A great based-on-actual-events sports movie that dealt with race relations in the Alexandria, VA in the early 1970's. From there to a more recent football game when I saw a Tweet that the Gophers game against Auburn in this year's Outback Bowl was available on YouTube. The Gophers still won.
Sunday I caught wind of the 2019 NCAA men's basketball championship game at US Bank Stadium on CBS. I forgot that the game between Virginia and Texas Tech went to overtime. So that was a nice surprise. The Cavaliers still won.
From there to a radio re-broadcast of last November's Gopher football game against Penn State, which featured a pair of 8-0 teams. The Gophers still won.
To get a little break from so much sports, I watched "The Rise of the Planet of the Apes." While I won't give a total spoiler here, let me say the ending seemed like fiction the first few times I saw the movie. Not any more.
Stay home (if you can) and be safe.
