April 8-12 is Minnesota Severe Weather Awareness Week. KDHL will have a special program Monday to kick off the week.  Paul Shea will host the program at 9:30 a.m. featuring Rice County Emergency Management Director Jennifer Hauser-Schmitz.  The program will be replayed in the evening for those who can’t listen in the morning and will be on the KDHL website.

Residents of the Faribault area will remember the tornadoes that struck September 20, 2018 forever.  There were 25 tornadoes confirmed in the state that evening and 10 touched down in Rice County.  Morristown experienced flattened homes.  The Faribault Municipal Airport was twisted into a mangled mess.  There was extensive tree damage reported throughout the region.

From Waseca to Waterville, Owatonna to Kenyon, Northfield to Cannon Falls thousands of trees were either toppled over or had their tops sheared off.

It was a miracle not a single injury was reported to people.  Some livestock was lost.

Tornado Drill Day is Thursday, an excellent opportunity for your family to practice what to do when a warning is issued.

Each day of the week focuses on a different weather topic.

  • Monday - Watches and Warnings
  • Tuesday- Severe Weather, Lightning, Hail
  • Wednesday- Floods
  • Thursday- Tornadoes (statewide tornado drills, not all counties participate in both drills)
  • Friday- Extreme Heat
