Prep Football Playoffs Take on New Look
For teams fortunate enough to get to play in the football playoffs, a number of different scenarios exist. Owatonna will host a section championship game Tuesday, November 17. Blooming Prairie will host a section title game Saturday, November 21. Triton will host a game Tuesday with the title game in their section Saturday. Medford and NRHEG are in a section that, for the time being, plans to play out a bracket and finish up the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
The Huskies are the four-time defending champ in Section 1-5A and are the top seed this year. OHS will host second-seed Rochester Mayo Tuesday night at 7 pm at OHS. The winner will be the section champ and the season will be over for both after the one-game playoff. Action will be heard on AM 1390 KRFO and on the free app. The Huskies rallied from behind to beat Mayo 35-28 in week one of the season.
Also in 1-5A Century and John Marshall square off Tuesday at Mayo High School, where there is a turf field. Austin entertains Northfield as well. Following Tuesday, the Rochester schools and Northfield are suspending athletics as they enter into distance learning.
Defending state champ Blooming Prairie gets one playoff game. The Awesome Blossoms, who came off a two-week break Wednesday and beat Fillmore Central, await the winner of Randolph at Goodhue on Tuesday. BP will play at 1 pm Saturday, November 21 for the Section 1A title. Listen to Kat Kountry 105 FM for the championship game.
Triton earned the second seed in Section 1AA and will host Kenyon Wanamingo Tuesday, November 17. The Knights haven't played the last couple of weeks. Top-seed Chatfield hosts Lewiston-Altura in the other semifinal. The winners play for the title on Saturday, November 21. Defending section champ Caledonia announced that sports were suspended. There is a school board meeting Monday in that district.
Section 2AA is planning for a full bracket of quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. Top seed Blue Earth Area has a first-round bye. They await the winner of fifth-seed St. Clair/Loyola and fourth-seed Norwood Young America. No. 6 NRHEG plays at No. 3 seed Medford Tuesday at 7 pm on Kat Kountry 105 FM. Seventh-seed JWP goes to second-seed Maple River.
The semifinals are Saturday, November 21 at 1 pm at the higher seed. The final is set for Saturday, November 28 at the high seed, also with a 1 pm kick off.
