Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester woman was arrested early Monday for stealing a pickup with a trailer attached and a dog in the passenger compartment.

Rochester police say the owner of the vehicle stopped to visit a friend at a home in the 1200 block of Marion Road Southeast and left the pickup running in the driveway. Moments later, the man heard the sound of the vehicle backing out of the driveway and watched as the thief drove away.

He immediately called 911 around 12:40 a.m. An officer in the area spotted the stolen pickup nearby. The officer reported the driver, later identified as 40-year-old Maria Smith, fled on foot after she stopped the pickup after apparently losing control on a snow-covered street. She was apprehended a short time later and a spokesman says she admitted taking the vehicle.

Police found the dog still inside the pickup and unharmed.
