Federal Dam, MN (KROC-AM News) - Authorities in northern Minnesota are reporting the death of a young child in a snowmobile crash.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office says the deadly incident occurred Monday afternoon at a rural property along Leech Lake near the town of Federal Dam. A news release says deputies and other emergency responders arrived at the scene and found a snowmobile had struck a tree stump, which sent the snowmobile down an embankment where it struck another tree next to the lake.

The snowmobile was being driven by a 35-year-old woman with a six-year-old passenger. Officials say the little girl suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Bemidji with unknown injuries.

The deadly incident remains under investigation and the names of the crash victims have not been released.
