Plunge into Special Olympics with These 5 Actions
You can support Special Olympics statewide and locally now and throughout the year by becoming involved in any of several ways.
Take the Polar Plunge to benefit more than 8,000 athletes in Minnesota Special Olympics on Saturday, January 28, at Lake Kohlmier in Owatonna. Nearly 200 people jumped into the lake each of the past two years, raising thousands of dollars. The Owatonna event is one of more than 20 plunges that will take place across the state this winter. Jumpers are required to raise $75 and are encouraged to wear a costume and bring their supporters to cheer them on. Check out other event details and requirements.
Registration and signup begins at 11AM Saturday at Lake Kohlmier. The plunge begins at 1PM. Participants should park at Federated Insurance at 1929 S. Cedar or Spare Time Entertainment at 333 18th St. S.E. and ride a shuttle. If jumping into the lake in January doesn't sound that inviting to you, come to Lake Kohlmier and watch those who do brave the frigid water. Hopefully you made a donation to a jumper.
Locally, the Owatonna Area Special Olympics depends on local businesses and service organizations to fund more than 100 athletes that participate in bowling, flag football, poly hockey, basketball, swimming, softball and track and field throughout each year. Volunteer coaches are always welcome to join the ranks. Training is provided. There are even chances for non-Special Olympics athletes to compete alongside Special Olympics athletes through the Unified Partner program that is offered for a number of sports. For more information on the Owatonna Area Special Olympics, contact Roy Koenig at (507) 451-2250 or at voiceofohs@yahoo.com.
