Owatonna’s Alex Burns Wins Adapted Athletics Most Valuable Player Award

Owatonna High School graduate Alex Burns was named the Ed Prohofsky Most Valuable Player Award winner for 2016 for adapted athletics.

Burns played on Owatonna's adapted floor hockey team since his seventh-grade year and scored more than 200 goals in his six seasons. During his senior season he had 79 goals and was named to the all-tournament team as Owatonna finished third in the state tournament. Burns scored three goals and assisted on three more in the third-place game, the final contest of his prep career. Teammate Zach Sencer was also an all-tournament selection.

OHS coach John Schiel nominated Burns for the award. CW Wolfe and Alex's brother Kyle are assistant coaches. Alex Burns was a three-year captain for the Huskies and is very active in Owatonna Area Special Olympics in multiple sports.

The award is named after Prohofsky, an adapted physical education teacher, who is considered a founding father for adapated athletics. The award was established in 2001. Burns is the first Owatonna athlete to win the honor.

The new season of adapted floor hockey for the Huskies begins January 16 at Minneapolis Edison.
