Owatonna Summer Baseball Playoffs Off to a Great Start
A pair of Owatonna summer baseball teams bid a fond farewell to their home field with playoff wins over the last few days. The VFW swept through their bracket of the district tournament Saturday and Sunday. The American Legion won their opener Monday night 7-1 over Winona.
Legion Post 77 got a complete pitching performance from Matt Seykora Monday at Fuller Field at Dartt's Park. He also drove in three runs, two with a booming double in a three-run second inning. Owatonna plated four in the first, RBI's from Nick Williams and Grant Achterkirch counting for a couple of the runs.
Owatonna turned four double plays and got out of a bases loaded, no one out predicament in the fourth inning. Post 77, the fourth seed, faces the top-seeded Rochester (Mayo) Redhawks Wednesday, July 21 at 8 pm at Marcusen Park in Austin.
After the winners' bracket semifinals Wednesday, four elimination games are set for Thursday. Action continues Friday and wraps up Saturday in Austin.
The VFW Post 3723 swept its playoff games over the weekend. Owatonna beat Albert Lea 9-5 in the opener. Owatonna rallied from a 6-0 deficit to beat Cannon Falls 8-7 in nine innings Saturday night, and beat Cannon Falls again Sunday 4-1 to advance to the final four. That portion of the tournament will be in Northfield Saturday and Sunday, July 24 and 25.
