Owatonna Powers Past Mayo in Playoffs; Dushek Sets School Scoring Record
The Owatonna Huskies won their playoff opener against Rochester Mayo 70-52 Tuesday night. Attendees at the packed OHS gym witnessed history as senior Evan Dushek became Owatonna's all-time leading scorer with a 33-point night that included several crowd-inciting dunks.
Dushek entered the night ten points shy of tying Drew Lundberg (1,565 points) for the top spot. The basket to put him over the top came as part of a three-point play fairly early in the game. The included photo of this historic moment is courtesy of Todd Walkingstick.
Owatonna led 2-0 before the clock started running as Mayo was charged with a technical foul for a player dunking the ball during warm-ups. Brayden Williams drilled the two free throws, as part of an 18-point night. The Huskies turned several early steals into fast-break points and OHS built a 41-20 lead by halftime.
Mayo fought back to within seven in the second half, but Owatonna responded in kind to push the advantage back into double-figures. Ty Creger added ten points.
The second-seeded Huskies (25-2) will host No. 3 seed Lakeville North (19-8) Saturday, March 12 at 7 pm at the OHS gym. Remember to get your tickets electronically in advance. OHS Activity Passes are not valid for section playoff games.
