"Why are there games on Monday?" I fielded that question a couple of times this week. Owatonna High School girls hockey and basketball had games on Monday, December 6. It's due to the OHS Holiday Concert on Tuesday, December 7 at 7 pm at the high school auditorium - one of my favorite events of the year.

On Monday, the OHS girls' hockey team had their six-game winning streak to open the season ended by No. 10 rated Rosemount 6-1. The Huskies' girls' basketball team lost at Red Wing 60-54 in a see-saw game.

In the hockey game at Four Seasons Centre, the Irish jumped ahead 3-0 after the first period, outshooting the Huskies 16-1 in the frame. Rosemount scored early in the second for a 4-0 lead. Samantha Bogen scored Owatonna's goal late in the second. The Irish potted two more midway through the third for the 6-1 victory.

Owatonna (6-1 overall, 4-0 in the Big Nine) is off until Thursday, December 16 against Albert Lea on Dudley Otto Rink, then travels to top-20 rated Blake on Saturday, December 18 for an afternoon game on AM 1390 KRFO, 94.7 FM and the app.

A back-and-forth basketball game in Red Wing ended with the Wingers on top 60-54. The contest experienced ten lead changes and three ties. OHS had a pair of 10-0 runs and a 9-0 burst after falling behind a couple of times.

Lexi Mendenhall led the way for OHS with 14 points. Hillary Haarstad added 13. Four others had at least five points. Each team had a nine-point lead at one time. Owatonna (1-2 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) hosts Farmington in a key Section 1-4A game Thursday, December 9 at 7:30 pm.
