Owatonna High School Music Department Sings of Holiday Joys
From Christmas carol favorites to stirring strains from the symphony orchestra to a strong selection composed by a former Carleton visiting professor, the Owatonna High School music department turned in another fabulous holiday concert Tuesday night in front of a packed OHS auditorium.
The OHS Carolers opened with Deck the Halls and progressed through Up of The Rooftop and Merrily We Go, finishing with We Wish you a Merry Christmas. The carolers have a busy schedule during the holidays, as reported by the OHS Magnet, student website. The group was student directed on Tuesday by Greta Jacobson and Elena Dant.
The orchestra, under the direction of Sandra Justice, presented two pieces. They opened with Sleeping Beauty Waltz by Tschaikowsky and followed with Anastasia: A Medley for Orchestra, arranged by Calvin Custer.
The OHS Concert Choir, directed by Chris Harris, sang five songs. Audrey Revier was the soloist on Lux Arumque, a Latin poem. The closing selection was I Believe This is Jesus by Undine Smith Moore, who spent some time in Minnesota in the 1970's as a visiting professor at Carleton College in Northfield and the College of St. Benedict in Collegeville.
The broadcast of Tuesday's recording can be heard on KRFO AM1390. The carolers portion will be on-air Friday, December 22 at 11AM. The symphony orchestra will air on Thursday, December 21 at 3PM. The OHS Concert Choir's performance will be on-air Friday, December 22 at 2PM. All three can be heard Christmas morning as well, starting with the carolers at 7AM, followed by the choir at 7:30AM and the orchestra at 8:30AM.
