Owatonna Boys Run to Repeat Title; Blooming Prairie Girl Takes First
The Owatonna High School boys cross country team repeated as Big Nine Conference champions on Tuesday, outracing Mankato East to the crown on the Brooktree Golf Course in Owatonna. The Huskies scored 38 points with three of the top five finishers. The Cougars came in with 51 points and the individual champ.
Isaiah Anderson, sophomore, East won the meet in 16:08. Owatonna's scoring runners included senior Preston Meier (2nd place, 16:17), senior Connor Ginskey (third, 16:49), senior Braydon Williams (fifth, 16:58), junior Trevor Hiatt (11th, 17:20) and junior David Smith 917th, 17:41).
The Owatonna girls finished fourth with 131 points, behind Northfield (61), Rochester Century (62) and Mankato East (91). Northfield had the individual champ with eighth grader Caley Graber is 19:24.
Owatonna's counting scores were sophomore Anna Cox (11th, 20:24), senior Jeni Burtis (19th, 20:35), Jaci Burtis (28th, 21:04), Carrsyn Brady (29th, 21:10) and senior Laura Stevenson (44th, 21:52).
OHS will host the Section 1AAA meet. This is the first year of three classes for cross country.
GOPHER CONFERENCE CROSS COUNTRY
WEM/JWP swept the girls and boys races at Riverview Golf Course in New Richland Tuesday. For the girls, WEM/JWP and NRHEG each scored 50 points. Blooming Prairie was third with 56, followed by Maple River with 89 and Medford at 90.
BP 7th grader Gloria Hernandez won the varsity race, the first champ for Blooming Prairie since Serena Schewe in 1999 according to coach John Bruns. Hernandez was also named the Gopher Conference 'Runner of the Year.' Eighth grader Quinn BanMaldeghem of NRHEG took second. Panther senior Torri Vaale was third.
WEM/JWP scored 30 points to dominate the boys race. Blooming Prairie had 79. NRHEG and Medford each scored 83. Junior Cole Stendel of Maple River won the individual title.
