Owatonna baseball and softball split doubleheaders with Rochester Mayo Tuesday. In the baseball double-dip at Fuller Field at Dartt's Park in Owatonna, the Huskies won the opener 10-3 for a Big Nine win and dropped the nightcap 14-1. In softball action, OHS lost the first game 11-5 and took the nonconference contest 14-5.

BASEBALL: GAME ONE: OWATONNA 10, MAYO 3

Mayo jumped ahead 2-0 in the third inning of the baseball opener. Owatonna answered with a five-run outburst against tall, hard-throwing Josh Auger. The Huskies worked four walks and three hits in the inning. Teagun Ahrens, Taylor Bogen and Grant Achterkrich had RBI.

Caleb Vereide threw five innings, allowing two earned runs and eight hits. Bogen tossed the last two. Ahrens had two hits and drove in two. Nick Williams had two hits including a line-drive run-scoring double that one-hopped the left-field fence.

Ayden Walter had a web-gem play at short to end the second inning, stranding a Spartans' runner at third.

BASEBALL: GAME TWO: MAYO 14, OHS 1, FIVE INNINGS (NONCONFERENCE)

Mayo scored in each of the first four innings of the second game, pulling away with a nine-run fourth inning. Ian Regal fanned nine and took a no-hitter into the fourth inning that was broken up by Bogen. OHS managed three hits.

A web-gem in the nightcap came in the second inning on a running grab by centerfielder Owen Beyer of a drive into the left-center gap that he lunged at to catch on a dead run.

Owatonna (4-6, 3-5) plays at Mankato East Thursday and goes to St. Cloud for games Friday and Saturday.

SOFTBALL: GAME ONE: MAYO 11, OWATONNA 5

Errors cost OHS. Six errors led to five unearned runs. The Huskies outhit Mayo 8-7. Parris Hovden had three hits including a home run. Zoie Roush drove in four runs.

SOFTBALL: GAME TWO: OWATONNA 14, MAYO 5 (NONCONFERENCE)

Coach Jeremy Moran said, "Bats came alive in the second game and our defense was much better...We made some changes to the batting order and scored some runs early."

OHS had a five-run second inning. Seven of their nine batters had multiple hits. Hovden smashed two more homers. Mehsa Krause hit her first varsity home run. Kendra Bogen went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.

Owatonna (7-6, 6-3 Big Nine) hosts top-five ranked Mankato East Thursday, May 5 at 6 pm. It is parents' night at Morehouse Park.
