Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The first major snowstorm of the season for southeastern Minnesota is causing travel headaches in the region, where National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning through noon on Sunday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation, as of 3 pm Saturday, was reporting that roadways throughout the region are completely snowcovered and slippery as a strong storm system moves through the region. The slick conditions had already contributed to numerous crashes and vehicle spinouts on the major highways. Around 2 inches was reported in Rochester in the mid-afternoon on Saturday and the National Weather Service is predicting the total will be in the 5 to 8-inch range when the storm ends on Sunday. Icy precipitation is also possible, and winds are predicted to increase with gusts as high as 40 miles-per-hour that will create significant drifting and reduced visibility for anyone who decides to risk traveling today, tonight and into tomorrow.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is operating over snowplows in the Rochester in an attempt to keep the roadways open. As always, motorists are reminded to give the snowplow operators plenty of room to do their work.
