Number of College Football Bowl Games Down
Before COVID-19 there were supposed to be a record 43 postseason college football games played this season. These are the bowl games fans not only specifically of the teams but general college football fans enjoy watching.
This year 37 games have or are scheduled to happen.
For years I've enjoyed watching the "Granddaddy of them all," The Rose Bowl presented by Capital One on New Year's Day. It's now part of the College Football Playoff National Championship.
It just won't be the same this year with the game not being played in Pasadena, California but in Arlington,Texas at AT&T Stadium (home of the Dallas Cowboys). #1 Alabama will take on #4 Notre Dame at 3:00 p.m. our time. There is no Rose Bowl Parade either.
The other national semifinal will be played at the Allstate Sugar Bowl at Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans (home of the NFL Saints). #2 Clemson goes up against #3 Ohio State. Game time New Year's night is 7:00 p.m.
This year the Bowl Selection Committee did not require teams to have a winning record to participate which led to some interesting games. A number of schools (including the University of Minnesota) said they would not participate in the bowl season citing some COVID issues during the season and a hope to keep the players and coaches in their program safe.
Here is a list of some bowl games not happening this year:
- Redbox Bowl - San Francisco
- Holiday Bowl- San Diego
- Quick Lane Bowl- Detroit
- Las Vegas Bowl
- Bahamas Bowl- Nassau Bahamas
- Fenway Bowl - Fenway Park Boston was supposed to be new this year
