The New Market Muskies are a victory away from wrapping up the Region 3C Tournament and receiving the first weekend of the State Tournament off for their reward.  The Muskies defeated Faribault 8-1 at Bell Field in Faribault Sunday and would play Friday for the possible Region title.

In my opinion the winner of Sunday's game should be the Region 3C champion.  They won every game possible in the winner's bracket and shouldn't have to play a team out of the elimination bracket.  More games played means more chances for injuries and the game is not necessary.

New Market was the Dakota-Rice-Scott League regular season champion and received great pitching performances Sunday by Faribault native Nate Rost and Derek Bergstrom of Elko-New Market.

Rost went the first innings and scattered 6 hits with 9 strikeouts and no walks.  Bergstrom had a strikeout and nobody on the bases in a clean ninth inning.

Egan Bonde started for Faribault and threw the first six innings.  He struck out 5 walked 2 and allowed 10 hits.  5 of the 8 runs allowed were earned.  Bonde threw 102 pitches, 70 for strikes.

Tyler Francis threw two no hit innings and Jimmy Roberts ended the game by striking out the three batters he faced.

The top of the order was very productive for the Muskies with 5 hits, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI by Dan Phyle and Joe McKibbon.  Nick Rost had two hits and an RBI and Andy Henkenmeyer collected two RBI in the New Market win.  New Market had 3 doubles.  They were stroked by Nick Rost, Andy Henkenmeyer and Phyle.

The Lakers only run came in the bottom of the third inning when Blake Langerud scored on an error.  The Muskies had 2 errors and Faribault one error.

No Faribault players had more than a hit and all the hits were singles.  Collecting hits for the Lakers were Blake Langerud, Derek Ritter, Mitch Johnson, Joey Grote, Porter Sartor and Jack Helgeson.

St. Patrick and New Prague were supposed to play Sunday but were rained out and play 8:00 p.m. Monday in Veseli.  The winner plays at Faribault against the Lakers Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.  The team that does not win Monday night will be the #4 seed out of Region 3C at the State Tournament.

My opinion is the Faribault game Wednesday should be for the #2 and #3 seed.  You could play that game Friday or Saturday if you are worried about too long of a layoff for teams.

The loser of the game Wednesday in Faribault will be the #3 seed out of Region 3C and the winner would have to beat New Market twice to win the Region.
