Today the Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors approved the use of a 35-second shot clock for boys and girls varsity basketball.

The 35-second shot clock for girls and boys varsity basketball will start with the 2023-2024 season. John Millea of the MSHSL also noted that schools will be responsible to update their systems and finding someone to operate the shot clock.

Differing Opinions of the Shot Clock

There are differing opinions when it comes to the implementation of the shot clock. Those for it see it as a useful tool to push the game of basketball forward in Minnesota and make games more entertaining to watch for spectators, among other reasons.

Those against the implementation note the cost of a shot clock and having someone trained to operate it will be difficult on small school districts in the state. Doug commented on the MSHSL's Facebook post page and noted that argument.

"stupid!! small schools have trouble finding people to run the game clock - now one more thing to look for qualified help, not to mention the expense that budgets are tight - as a former small school AD & coach I've always been against this!!!" - Doug on MSHSL's Facebook Page

Of course, others were happy to see the shot clock approved by the board of directors.

"Bout time! Something so simple takes a whole flipping year!" - Kelly on MSHSL's Facebook Page

Others were not for or against it, but rather enjoy the arguments presented on both sides.

"As a high school coach... ok. Wasn't really for it or against it. Won't affect too much. The hyperbole either direction, for or against, is entertaining to read, though." - Jeremy on MSHSL's Facebook Page

MSHSL's Feedback on Shot Clocks

The Minnesota State High School League received feedback from member schools on the shot clock. Currently, 18% of Minnesota schools have shot clocks, and 26% said that they could have them in place by 2022-23 and another 21% said they could have them installed for 2023-24.

A total of 24% of Minnesota schools did not support the implementation of shot clocks, while 35% support implementation in 2022-2023, 28% supported implementation in 2023-2024 and 11% supported implementation in 2024-25 or later, according to John Millea.

Back in May the National Federation of State High School Associations permitted state assocations to allow the implementation of a 35-second shot clock starting in the 2022-2023 season.

Beginning with the 2022-23 season, a 35-second shot clock will be permitted in high school basketball games by state association adoption. A proposal for a national rule mandating a shot clock was not approved.

According to the article from May, rule 2-14 states that each state association may adopt a shot clock beginning in the 2022-23 season -- according to guidelines outlined in the Basketball Rules Book -- to encourage standardization among states.
