Albert Lea, MN (KROC AM News) - The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has released more information about an “active shooter” incident in Albert Lea.

It began early Sunday at the Shady Oaks apartment building at 800 S. 4th Avenue in Albert Lea where officers were sent after receiving reports of possible gunshots.

One of the responding officers was struck by gunfire in the vest. The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries as were two Albert Lea men who had been shot.

The shooter was identified as 21-year-old Devin Weiland of Albert Lea. The BCA says during the standoff, a state trooper fired a gun and Weiland sustained shrapnel injuries but it is unknown at this time whether he was shot. Weiland then surrendered and was taken to St Marys Hospital where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Albert Lea Police Department is conducting a separate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a person who was found at the same apartment complex as officers were evacuating the building. The BCA says the death is not related to the shooting incident. More information on that investigation is expected to be released after the person is identified and the cause of death is known.

Agencies involved in the response to the active shooter situation included the South Central Drug Investigation Unit; River Valley Tactical Team; Austin/Mower Special Incident Response Team; Minnesota State Patrol Special Response Team; Washington County SWAT Team; the Freeborn, Dodge, Mower, Steele and Waseca County sheriff’s offices; the Albert Lea, Waseca, Owatonna and Minneapolis police departments; Albert Lea Fire Rescue; Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service; Mayo Clinic Health System (Albert Lea); Freeborn, Mower, Winona and Dodge County emergency management agencies; and Freeborn County Public Health.
