A popular brand of dry cat food is being voluntarily recalled by it's manufacturer.  The J. M. Smucker Company is recalling two specific lots of its Meow Mix Original Choice Dry Cat Food due to the potential of salmonella contamination.  The 30-pound bags were sold at select Walmart locations in a variety of states - including Wisconsin.

At the present time, there have been no reports of any pets getting sick or having adverse reactions to the pet food.  However, the company is being cautious due to the potential for illness.

According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, the potential for salmonella in the pet food doesn't just pose a problem for cats, it could also transfer to humans.  That transfer could happen "especially if they have not washed their hands after having contact with their cat's food, food surfaces, and/or cats that have been in contact with the impacted product".

To monitor against the potential symptoms, the FDA offers the following guides to watch for in relation to salmonella contagion:

  • In Humans:  Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal craping, and fever.  More serious symptoms would include arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
  • In cats: Vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, fever, excessive salivation.

The two lot codes of the Meow Mix Original Choice Dry Cat food being recalled are '1081804' and '1082804'.  Both lot codes were sold in 30-pound bags at Walmart stores - with a UPC code of '2927452099' and "Best If Used By Date(s)" of '9/14/2022'.
