NCAA Overturns Bad Call Against Iowa During Minnesota Game

It is impossible to watch football each weekend and not see a game in which there are questionable calls made by the referees. I will say this. College football is a fast and violent sport and some of the calls the refs have to make come in the blink of an eye. But with modern-day replay available, they also have the opportunity to stop the game and get things right. Something that failed to happen several times during the Iowa versus Minnesota game. But Iowa got news this week that a call made against them had been overturned by the NCAA.

Sorry, Iowa fans. Cooper DeJean is still waiting for his apology. The invalid fair catch call that cost Iowa a win against the Gophers will live on in infamy. But the NCAA did reverse another bad call that had Iowa fans up in arms at Kinnick Stadium. The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that in the final minute of the first half against Minnesota, Iowa linebacker Karson Sharar was called for targeting. The hit looked nasty, but even the announcers that day weren't sure it deserved a targeting penalty.

The refs decided it did. Sharar was ejected for the remainder of the game, and the first half of Iowa's next game. On Thursday, the University of Iowa announced that the NCAA coordinator of officials had overturned the targeting penalty and Sharar would be eligible to play in the first half against Northwestern on November 4th, according to the Gazette. It doesn't get Sharar back a lost half of football, but at least he can suit up and play right away against the Wildcats. Iowa will take any positive officiating news it can get right now.
