Guy Jet Packs Next to Airliner At 3000 Feet

It's one of my favorite parts of a flight to look out the window as we come in for a landing. Mostly, because I can't wait to get off the plane but also it's kind of cool to check out things below from the air.

The last thing I would expect to see is a guy wearing a jet pack flying fairly close to the plane I'm on at an altitude of about 3000 feet.

That's just what happened this past Sunday as an American Airlines jet was coming in for a landing at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

"Tower, American 1997, we just passed a guy in a jet pack," the American Airlines pilot radioed to air traffic control, according to recordings by LiveATC.net.

I'm sure this isn't something air traffic controllers hear every day. "American 1997… Okay…. Were they off to your left side or right side?" the controller asked.

The pilot reported the guy wearing the jet pack was flying at an altitude of about 3000 feet and approximately 300 yards from American Jetliner.

Moments later the tower received another report of a man wearing a jet pack flying near their SkyWest jet. "We just saw the guy passing by us in the jet pack," the SkyWest pilot told controllers.

Air Traffic Controllers immediately warn other aircraft in the area of the situation and warned them to avoid the area. the FBI was notified and is investigating.

"You don’t hear that every day," a JetBlue pilot said. "Only in L.A."
