The Goodhue Wildcats girls basketball team fell to a very good Big Nine Conference  Red Wing team 55-51 in the Red Wing Invitational Tournament over the weekend.  The Wildcats defeated River Falls, Wisconsin Friday 58-49.  Coach Josh Wieme's Wildcats will be very good again this season with only two seniors on their roster.  6'3 post Lexie Lodermeier and 5'10 guard Kate Opsahl are the seniors returning for Goodhue.

Zumbrota-Mazeppa is led by 6'1 junior Ali Hunstad who can play any position on the floor.  The Cougars defeated defending State Class A Champion Lyle/Pacelli Friday 60-38 jumping to a 27-8 lead at the half.  Hunstad finished with 25 points including 3 three point baskets and was the only player for Z-M in double digits.  The Cougars were 10 of 20 from the free throw line and the Athletics 11 of 13.

Saturday Hunstad scored 25 points and had 19 rebounds against Minnehaha Academy in a 69-49 runaway from a traditional girls hoops power in the state.  Hunstad again drained 3 three point baskets and three other players also had double digit nights.  senior Megan Johnson 14 points, senior Hannah Mensink 11 points and 5'11 junior Jakalyn Arendt 10 points.  Zumbrota-Mazeppa has six seniors on this year's team.

When last season ended Zumbrota-Mazeppa Head Coach Andy Bromeling told KDHL on the Zumbrota-Mazeppa Coaches Show sponsored by the News Record and Zumbro Shopper his team needed to improve on defense if they wanted to make noise this season.  Allowing less than 50 points in their first two games is a very good start in that department.
