Brooklyn Center, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison today announced an amended criminal complaint has been filed against former Brooklyn Center Police Officer Kim Potter.

She now faces a first-degree manslaughter charge in addition to the second-degree manslaughter charge contained in the original complaint stemming from the death of Daunte Wright. The new charge alleges Potter fatally shot the 20-year-old man while recklessly handling or using a firearm during a traffic stop in April.

Brooklyn Center Police say their investigation determined Potter likely mistook her handgun for a Taser and shot Wright when she went to shock him after he a resisted arrest. Officials say he had been pulled over for a traffic violation when it was discovered that he was wanted on a warrant for missing a court hearing in a criminal case.

Potter’s trial is currently scheduled to begin in late November.
