Football Recap: Tiger Stampedes for Six Touchdowns, ‘Hawks Fly to Late Win
Week one of the high school football season saw some lopsided scores locally and at a last-minute win for a Big Southeast team. Several individuals put up some big numbers as Owatonna, Medford and Blooming Prairie cruised to wins.
The Huskies' Sol Havelka threw four touchdown passes to four different receivers as the defending state champs beat Faribault 41-0. Owatonna's defense gave up just 125 yards.
Medford's Willie VonRuden led the Tigers to a 51-0 thrashing of Winona Cotter Friday night. He rushed for 158 yards and three touchdowns, threw two scores and returned a punt for pay dirt. He earned KRFO/Paffrath Jewelers Athlete of the Week honors during Saturday's "Coaches Show" broadcast.
Blooming Prairie quarterback Seth Peterson burned Southland for over 400 yards passing and six touchdowns in a 40-14 victory. NRHEG fell to Pipestone Area 35-7. The Panthers gave up a couple of turnovers for points and a special teams touchdown as well. Triton lost their opener to Rochester Lourdes 42-6.
In the Big Southeast, the Daily News reports that Winona scored twice in the final two minutes to stun Rochester John Marshall 20-14. JM had taken a 14-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Rochester Mayo went on a two-minute, three touchdown scoring burst in the their 52-28 win over Austin. The Spartans forced five turnovers according to the Austin Daily Herald. Owatonna goes to Mayo for a 7 pm kick off Friday, September 7.
