The Faribault Falcons defeated the Cannon Falls Bombers 6-2 today at Bahl Field in Faribault.  Senior Samantha Holmberg scored a hat trick within about a 12 minute time frame in the second half after the Bombers had pulled within a 3-2 score.  Faribault Head Coach Maddie Justin was excited to see the sharing of the ball by her team which was a key in the victory.

The Falcons had a 2-0 lead at the half holding the Bombers to two shots and tallied six of their own.  Eighth grader Sydne Bauer notched the first goal at the 24:33 mark and junior Mikayla Bohner connected with 21:14 to go in the half.  Junior goalkeeper Olivia Williamson did not allow Cannon Falls to get many good shots in the first half.

Faribault added to their lead at 33:40 of the second half when freshman Mercedes Huerta scored following a great move around a defender.  Bomber junior defender Anna Giese got her team on the board at the 27:27 mark and sophomore Aizlyn Thim scored at 25:52 to make the game very interesting.

Huerta made a nice pass to Holmberg for her first goal with 24:10 to go in the game.  Junior Marta Schonebaum assisted Holmberg's second goal at 14:07 and Huerta assisted Holmberg and the Falcons final goal of the day at 12:14.

Unofficially Faribault had 17 shots and Cannon Falls 8 in the game.  The Falcons improved to 1-1 on the season and the Bombers dropped to 0-2.  Cannon Falls fell to Schaeffer Academy in their opener Thursday night in Rochester.

Faribault had their home opener Thursday and lost to Waseca 5-2.  Coach Justin saw a lot of improvement in her team and says they have been hit a bit by the injury bug already.  Two players are out with concussions that were not suffered while playing soccer.

The Falcons travel to Rochester Lourdes Tuesday and have their Big Nine Conference home opener Thursday when Rochester John Marshall comes to town.

Cannon Falls will have their home opener Monday against Hope Academy before their Hiawatha Valley League opener Thursday at Lake City.

Our Faribault State Farm Insurance players of the game were Holmberg, Huerta, Bauer and sophomore Sarah Engbrecht.

It was fun having Brian Meier call the first girls soccer game ever on KDHL Radio  just a couple days after our first regular season boys game on the airwaves.
