Driving at 2am With Your Lights Off Isn’t a Good Idea

Authorities were called to the scene of a two vehicle accident on I-35 Saturday morning. The State Patrol reports a pickup driven by 20 year of Evan Horstmann of Austin was pulled over on the northbound shoulder with his vehicles lights off. When Horstmann attempted to re enter the northbound lane with lights off, he was struck by a northbound semi operated by 62 year old Michael Smith of Des Moines, Iowa.

Smith was not injured in the accident. The Patrol's report indicates alcohol was involved in regards to Horstmann. He was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester with non-life threatening injuries. Mayo One was called out.

The accident occurred on I-35 just north of the Ellendale exit at a little after 2am.
