Owatonna will take part in their 46th annual Christmas Bird Count this Saturday, December 16.  Darryl Hill who has been a part of every bird count was a guest on AM 1390's Talk of the Town.

The count area covers a 15 mile diameter circle with Havana as the center point. So this area includes not only Owatonna, but also Steele Center, Clinton Falls and Claremont.

You're welcome to take part in the field count or count the birds at your feeder from your home. When counting at the feeder, log the largest number of any one species of bird you see at one time. Darryl has a goal of 100 counters this year. To become a part of the field count or to find out more call Hill at (507)-451-5073.

Last year's count saw lower bird counts mainly due to the winter storm warnings which also resulted in no recommended travel. This year's forecast looks more promising with highs around 30.

Darryl share the interesting story of how the bird count began.
