The Minnesota Associated Press updated their high school football rankings today with no radio stations participating in the voting.  A Television station, website and handful of newspapers are the "panel of media voters."

A total of 11 people do the Associated Press rankings

Many radio stations across the state including KDHL and KQCL Faribault, KRFO Owatonna broadcast games in their entirety.  KFIL in Preston and many others across the entire state go to games each week and watch the entire game.

Intently I might add. Often using statistics from the teams during their broadcast.

A television station typically goes out to get footage from multiple games and has someone give them the final score and maybe a few details.  Usually, they don't actually see the teams playing the games.  Just highlight footage.

I don't pretend to know anything about nine-man or the largest schools class and I don't know much about teams in other areas of the state.  But neither do those folks.

However there are radio stations in those areas that do cover the teams and see them on a regular basis.  It's a resource the Associated Press should use when deciding their rankings.

The panel of Associated Press media voters includes one metropolitan television reporter, two from the Rochester Post Bulletin, three individuals from the Star Tribune, one from the St. Paul Pioneer Press.  The only other "AP Panel Members" are representatives of the Mesabi Tribune, West Central Tribune, Mankato Free Press and Prep Redzone.com.

They are doing a good job but it could be better if more people from around the state were consulted.  I'm sure these reporters talk to coaches from the area to get their opinions but there is nothing like actually seeing the teams in person to determine just how good they area.

Just my two cents worth. I'm not advocating myself should be a member of the panel just some radio station representatives.

There should be no ties in these rankings.  If the voting points numbers end in a tie flip a coin to determine the higher ranking.  I don't think the teams will really care.

I would love to hear what you think.
