Not too long ago, I had a day as a mom where I felt completely helpless.  It was almost time for "Meet the Teacher" at school and there was a day when my child seemed to be unrecognizable to me.  OCD and severe anxiety were now part of our everyday life and I had absolutely no idea who I could trust or what to do next to help my child.  Helpless doesn't actually even begin to describe how I felt as a mom, especially when I found out all of this was the result of a trauma that happened while at an elementary school in Rochester, Minnesota.

I never thought I'd be the mom who had to hide medicine and knives in her house but that was the reality for many months.  I also never thought I'd be calling to have my child seen by a therapist or counselor but I am so thankful for the individuals who were there for our family and who helped us learn how to live successfully with the challenges that mental health and mental illness present.

Mental Health is real and if you are needing help, check this resource in Rochester, Minnesota

Today, you'd probably never know that my family was walking through the thickness of mental health issues a few years ago.  But this is still something we live life with and now I have what I call the "OCD Radar".  I can tell when something is not quite right because the hand washing will become more extreme or I'll notice the ticks in even the slightest ways.

Mental illness and mental health are real issues.  I know that it wasn't talked about much when I was a kid but today, it is all around us in conversations.  And one organization in Rochester is here to help - NAMI Southeast Minnesota.
