Winter’s Icy Grip Loosens on Prep Sports Teams
Several local high school teams played their season openers Friday. At least a couple more will get their seasons underway Saturday. Outdoor baseball and softball should start soon. Many teams have had events and games canceled that won't be made up.

2013 state football champion teammates Carter McCauley and Andrew Stelter continue to be recognized for their academic accomplishments, having each finished their college football playing careers.
Baseball Teams Hold Bowling Tournament
Outfielders, infielders and pitchers were all trying to throw strikes Thursday as Gopher Conference baseball teams gathered in Waterville for a bowling tournament. Host school Waterville-Elysian-Morristown won the event, edging Blooming Prairie. Medford, Maple River and NRHEG tied for third.
Players Named to All-Star Teams
A pair of Owatonna players will continue their hockey season this weekend in an all-star festival at the Plymouth Ice Center. Zach Wiese and Casey Johnson were selected to play this weekend after their performances last weekend
Golden Gopher Road Trip Coming to Owatonna
The annual University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Road Trip will again stop in Owatonna. The statewide tour to promote the university's athletics' program is scheduled for Tuesday, May 8 at 8AM at the Owatonna Country Club. The event is free and includes breakfast
Storm Knocks Down Dugout, Domes
The impact the continued winter weather is having on local sports teams and facilities is reaching the absurd stage. The wind from the weekend blizzard knocked down the first base dugout at Jeff Reese Field in New Richland, the baseball home for NRHEG.
Medford Softball, Owatonna Tennis Win Openers Thursday
The high school spring sports season began Thursday for a number of local teams, though postponements still outnumbered the events that got in. Owatonna's boys' tennis team won their season opener at Mankato West 5-2. The Huskies have had three meets delayed.

New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva graduate Carlie Wager lived her childhood dreams by playing for the University of Minnesota. Another dream came true Thursday night when she was drafted by the Minnesota Lynx.
