The Truth About A Lot More Parking Coming to Downtown Rochester
Had a few questions trickle in over the weekend about more Rochester parking in the works at the former AMPI site and maybe even the old K-Mart site. Is it true? Yes and no.
First, some background. In early 2019, the K-Mart site on 9th Street SE in Rochester, Minnesota was sold to Camegaran LLC out of Hastings, MN for $7,000,000.
Then, in December 2020,
"The same developer that owns Rochester's former K-Mart property has purchased the Associated Milk Producers Inc property for just slightly more than $3.7 Million." Read More: Former Plant Along Zumbro River Purchased for $3.7 Million
According to Jeff Kiger at the Rochester Post Bulletin, the real estate developer is going to add almost 700 parking spots to the current 729 hard-fought spaces.
“We hope to have the approval in June and envision having work occur in the summer and activating the parking in the fall,” said Mike Mattingly, a Camegaran principal." (RPB)
The plan to demolish the entire K-Mart building is on hold, instead, they'll just take out the former Salvation Army Thrift Store part of the building. That'll make space for some of the parking spaces, the rest will come from demo of some out-buildings on the former AMPI site.
I could find no application on file, but if Camegaran hopes to get approval by June, it is likely forthcoming. One the application is made, it can be discussed in earnest with the neighbors of the property.
The Answer Is Yes and No, Really?
Yep. Yes, there are plans to add a bunch of parking in Downtown Rochester, and no, they haven't been filed with the city. Boom Shaka-Laka.
