The HBO Show ” Last Week Tonight” Wrote A Hilarious Ad For Minnesota Car Dealership [VIDEO- NSFW]
Apparently wearing a pickle costume to hawk cars is a new thing and a dealership in Zumbrota MN is part of the new phenomenon. Not only do they wear a pickle costume but all say the same dumb joke in the commercials. John Oliver, is the host of HBO's Last Week Tonight and he called them out saying they are all copying each other.
So he and his team put together a ridiculous contest asking a car dealership to do a commercial that they write for them and they have to do exactly what is written in that script to a tee. Steve Johnson of Zumbrota Ford was one of the pickle ads and he agreed that they would do it.
Oliver describes it as a "tense domestic psychodrama" that was "mainly about a marriage in serious trouble. The actual commercial is hilarious starting out as what seems like a clip from a lifetime movie. The ad apparently ran in the Zumbrota area along with a national audience on HBO.
In a way I see how the pickle costume is a funny kitschy way to get peoples attention and seems to revive the old stereotype of the used car salesman yelling his pitch at the top of his lungs out on the lot. I say good for this dealership in the little town of Zumbrota for finding the humor in all of this. Who knows, if it puts them on the map and they sell some vehicles out of it then it was all worth it. Check out the video below, the ad that they did for the show plays at 3: 45 into the video.
