The Amazing Place That Still Has Snow In Minnesota In July

Minnesotans are used to seeing snow on the ground during many months of the year. But is there really still snow in Minnesota... in July?

The winter of 2023 was record-setting in many parts of the Land of 10,000 Lakes, with massive amounts of snow falling and piling up...and up... and up. But with the warm weather that then took over the North Star State in May and June, much of that snow melted-- so much so that near-record spring flooding happened along the St. Croix, Mississippi, and other rivers.

But all that snow must surely have melted by mid-July, right? Wrong! There's STILL a pile of snow hanging around here in the Gopher State... even though it's the middle of summer.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) in Bloomington posted a picture on its Twitter page recently that showed a dirt-covered snow pile STILL visible! "The snow pile at @mspairport just wants to hang around and enjoy the warm weather!" was the message. (See the picture below.)

Now while that snow was leftover from earlier this winter, when is the earliest its actually snowed in Minnesota? Well, it's not July, thankfully-- but it's not too far off. Try June. And August. Really.

According to this Minnesota DNR story from the State Climatology Group, there have been many tall tales about Minnesotans witnessing freak snowfalls up north near Ely or Brainerd on the 4th of July, but none of those stories have ever been actually confirmed.

But there HAVE been two other instances of summer snows that have been validated by verifiable authorities here in the Bold North, the DNR says:

As it stands right now the latest recorded measurable snow in Minnesota remains at 1.5 inches at Mizpah in Koochiching County on June 4, 1935 and the earliest documented snow in Minnesota is a trace that fell at the Duluth Airport on August 31, 1949.

So that pretty much means, even though it's rare, it's pretty much snowed-- at least once-- during every month of the year in Minnesota. Check out the latest snow pile pic below, and keep scrolling to remember some classic winters of the past too (even though it won't be long before the snow falls again, right?!?)
